Houses in Art History: From Cave Walls to Dreams

In this online seminar, which consists of two sessions by Art Historian and academician Nazlı Pektaş,  the house will be considered as an image beyond being a space and a physical presence. The presence of the house in the history of art as a witness of the inside and outside will be explained in a chronological way with examples from different disciplines.

Program:

In the first part of the seminar will discuss the houses in art history, starting from prehistoric houses with examples from the paintings of the cave walls of the Paleolithic period to the end of the 19th century. The first part of the seminar dealt with cave wall paintings of the Paleolithic period, starting from prehistoric houses and 19th century. In the first part, while focusing on Flemish Art and 17th Century Dutch Interior painting, the concept of house in Vermeer's paintings will be discussed in detail.

In the second part of the seminar, the concept of the house will be pursued in the changing language of 20th-century art. The examples that we encounter on the passage from modern art to contemporary art will be discussed in light of the interdisciplinary language of contemporary art.
