URBAN HOUSING / BUILDING WITH WOOD AS MAIN MATERIAL

WINGÅRDHS ARCHITECTS

Wingårdhs are pioneers in contemporary wood-building in Sweden, and maybe most particularly when it comes to hosuing - as they were the architects of the first development where a 8-storey dwelling area actually looked like made of wood - inside out. The housing complex from 2013, Strandparken, has become a role-model and an example for "how to make the transition happen" and the project by the developer, Arvet, together with Wingårdhs achitects count as one of the most important wood-buildings in Sweden today, visited by delegations from over 120 countries wanting to learn "how to do it". Wingårdhs continue to develop wood-building - one of their latest housing projects is Kilströmskaj, where ideas from Strandparken are pushed even further, is a new area in Karlskrona, established as a centre for new wood-building techniques. They will present these projects, and some more in a passionate key-note speek with timber at its core.

ADAPTING AND ADDING TO THE EXISTING

Project presentations from Sweden and Turkey and a panel discussion about adaptive use and the possibilities of implementing timber to existing projects to achieve sustainability in architecture.

We need to see the existing as an inspiration and a valuable resource. To build with what we have rather than rebuilding should be a inititation for every sustainable project.

Tengbom Architects used this idea to spark of one of their recent developments in central Stockholm - Trikåfabriken; once old, run down industrial buildings, now a modern office-building paving the way for sustainable development on all levels.

Kjellander Sjöberg architects will present recent work where existing structures are clear catalysts of the contemporary additions. The restaurant Magnolia in Stockholm, and the creative office space Gjuteriet in Malmö are both projects where the existing old structures get new life, through additions where timber plays a central role.

Mert Eyiler will talk about the tree - playhouse project, which was selected for the 2020 AIA UK Excellence in Design Award shortlist by MeMALondon, based on the description of a small child as "Salamander".

Yelda Gin will talk about the cross-disciplinary research for the innovative use of natural materials at the Centre for Natural Material Innovation at the University of Cambridge while emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the academy and the practice. She will present three research-based collaborative design projects focusing on the adaptive and innovative use of engineered timber: Oakwood Tower and Unfolding with PLP Architects and a primary school extension project with Waugh Thistleton Architects.

WOOD FOR COMMUNITIES

Project presentations from Sweden and Turkey and a panel discussion about the use of timber at civic/public buildings and outdoor spaces for community use. Approaching a city like a large living-room for its citizens with indoor as well as outdoor spaces.

At its best a city is like a large living-room for its citizens, and contains indoor, as well as outdoor spaces where people can meet, socialize, relax, work. Project presentations and a panel discussion about use of wood and designing for indoor and outdoor public spaces.

In Skellefteå, a northern town in Sweden, a new Culture Center, all in timber and as such one of the worlds largest public spaces in wood just opened in september 2020. But wood, is not a new center fo interest for the city, wich has been a pioneer within wood-building for decades.

The City will present its wood-strategy, and some of its main projects - mainly outdoor - and the team behind Sara Kulturhus will present their vision of a unique house, now open to the public. Evren Basbug strives to create a critical balance between the experience and the experimental, thus keeping the design mindset fresh at all times. His projects such as Bostanli Footbridge and pavilion by the sea are among successful examples of the use of wood material for outdoor public spaces.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS - MANAGING OUR FORESTS

A panel discussion about sustainable forest management and classification of various trees used for timber construction in Sweden and Turkey.

We all have an interior image of a forest we love - and fear of losing it can feel natural: Do we have enough trees for all we want to build - or are the forests about to end? Many questions arise as we build in wood instead of other materials - but the question should rather be, how can we ensure that we take care of our forests in a good way, and grow enough new trees?

The climate emergency is now and as architects we have a responsibility to act. Today we have the tools and knowledge to make a difference. Waugh Thistleton are world leaders in engineered timber and pioneer in the field of tall timber buildings with experience in delivering a wide range of building types from housing to commercial, mixed-use to cultural. The quality of our buildings and our commitment to the use of timber construction has earned us an international reputation in environmentally sustainable architecture and design.

Through examples of WTA’s built projects and extensive research Kirsten Haggart will explain how we can all build a sustainable future.

With over 20 years of design experience working across sectors, Kirsten’s strength lies in designing site sensitive developments through the management of stakeholders and engagement with collaborators, successfully navigating public consultation and statutory authorities to pilot proposals through the planning process.

Throughout her career Kirsten has developed projects and concepts that push boundaries and change mindsets. From the pioneering Murray Grove, which altered the global perception of how CLT should be used, to MultiPly, a carbon neutral timber pavilion for the V&A Museum which demonstrates how engineered timber structures can contribute to the circular economy, her work challenges the status quo. Most recently Kirsten has developed the visionary concept of Trenezia a zero carbon community of 1,600 homes and a cultural hub built over the lake in Bergen.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS - SAFETY AND REGULATIONS

Panel discussion about safety, fire, earthquake regulations and overcoming public psychological barriers about timber construction.

A discussion and panel talk about safety, fire, earthquake regulations and overcoming public psychological barriers about wood construction

Wood burns - everyone that has made a camp-fire knows it. It is also sensitive to moist and humidity, and needs to be protected. And it may seem less solid, facing earthquakes and other forces of nature, than other materials. All this is true - but it is also true that solid timber is almost impossible to get to burn, as charcoal makes an outer layer, protecting the tree core, and that once the wood is properly protected, it endures weather also in harsh climate. Construction methods of today has evolved - for wood as for other materials and it is know possible to build both higher and wider than ever before, also in timber. This talk will answer many questions around wood-building, and explain why firefighters rather enter a CLT- or GLULAM timber-building, than a steel or concrete one, should they need to extinct fire. It will also look into new timber construction and show how new methods are safer than before, should the earth tremble. As regulations evolve, so does techniques and technologies, helping us overcome challenges and fear.

When ı was graduated, master carpenter from Model Workshop was retired and together established small scale desing and build workshop for the market. Always we focused on using best row material and improving end product.

I had training in Genova / Savona - Italy in MASPELL wood vacum drayer Company on purpose in 1984. It was cell scale technical timber material experience and one of the turning point in my profession. Fallowing two years I visited verious solid timber high end furniture producer small companies in Como region / Italy. I focused on using wood materials more in any form and purpose on my mind.

I moved to US in 1990 spend some time in Nashville / TN and Washington DC, interest in stick frame timber structures. I notice Canadian Wood Products at the timber structure site in Alexandria / Virginia. I fallow the sign move to North to Toronto / Ontario – Canada in 1992.

I had a year survey from east to West cost for a well organised timber structure company. I was agree on cooperation with Normerica Inc. As one of the best Canadian timber structure company in 1993. Additionally, Still Creek,Cedar Product Company from West Cost BC, and Exulon, hard wood product company from Quebec , are the Canadian partner companies.

Working on timber and timber combined buildings restoration Project was the advantage for the team to improve the details and the product. Giorgio Gianighian from Venice is one of the best consultant related our conservation and restoration Project. Heavy timber structure Projects was extended the scope. Gerald Epp from BC, Gerhard Scikofer from Graz, Ernst Ghery from Zurich are most exprianced consultant in this field.

Still today, timber, timber brick and stone combine new and old structures desing and build projects are my field of interest. SUSTAINABLE PLANNING

Presentations and panel discussion about the systematic approaches to sustainable planning. Wood is not only a material to build houses - it is at the core of sustainable development of many levels of society.

Wood is not only a material to build houses - it is at the core of sustainable development of many levels of society as it helps create a just, equal industry, build infrastructure and houses in renewable materials, keep craft and knowledge alive and evolve. In the relation between local ressources and industry and the growing of new needs lies real potential for sustainable growth.

The example from Duved - where a small village in the North of Sweden is becoming a role-model for new type of urban development, works as a show-case for new models for economy, ownership and participation as well as for architecture and city-planning around new activities. The municipality, together with a strategy plan and a well-anchored network on a local scale has made a new kind of development possible. And it happens fast! The countryside of Duved is becoming Swedens best test-bed for future sustainable living, and will continue to inspire on national as well as international level!

INNOVATION & FUTURE POSSIBILITES

Computational design and digital manufacturing methods used in design education and industry, as well as new technologies for treatment of wood as a material have made a complete new structure possible for upcoming timber construction.

Scanners, CN2-cutters, computer-aided design and parametric models makes calculating value of material take on new challenges. And it does not cost more to cut the material in a curved line, than a straight one! Loss of material can be reduced in the same time as design becomes more inspiring! The digital machinery also helps us get detailing back on a craft-level, that has not been affordable in a long time, due to the time-consuming work-phases of before.

The spaces concieved can respond to many different demands and open up to a richer environment - for all senses, and push development on a visual as well as accoustic scale. The wooden material can also be apparent, and as such work as a strong visual reassuring element - the human body naturally feels well when surrounded by nature. Nature can also inspire form and function and take technical solutions to new levels of sustainablity through biomimicry and other recent design methodologies.
